The Religious Studies curriculum at The Oxford Academy allows students to develop knowledge of religions and worldviews (atheism and humanism).

Students will be encouraged to investigate religions and worldviews through varied experiences and viewpoints. They will have time to reflect on their own ideas and the ideas of others. They will be able to respond to religions and worldviews in an informed way.

The curriculum reflects the Christian ethos of the school; it also covers a range of other religions and world views, reflecting diversity on both a community and a national level. We hope that RS at The Oxford Academy promotes students to have a spirit of open-mindedness, reflectiveness, tolerance and curiosity that will stay with them for life.

Students will start Key Stage 3 with the topic of What is religion? To introduce them to a variety of aspects that make up a religion. This enables students to see the similarities and differences between religions.

Moving through KS3, students will cover different aspects of Christianity, from its development to the teachings and practices of Christians. They will also cover Buddhism and Sikhism religions that will be new to them. We also recap the teaching of Islam as we have a number of Muslim students at the school.

At the end of Key Stage 3, students move onto a more thematic way of studying. They begin year 9 by looking at humanism. This highlights to students that not everyone is religious, but people do still have core values and beliefs. They then look at ethical issues that they may be familiar with. The concepts of war, justice, discrimination, right to life and many other topics.

Students will look at these from a perspective of the law, societal, and religious views. Students will be encouraged to actively participate in these lessons, to think critically about the information they have studied and the view of others to enable them to draw their conclusions on the issues.
