The English curriculum at The Oxford Academy aims to nurture a love of literature and reading for pleasure amongst pupils. As a consequence of this, we provide pupils with the opportunity to develop socially, emotionally, culturally and intellectually.

The curriculum introduces pupils to knowledge which will be of most use to them in further academic contexts and to afford them the opportunity of choice in KS4, KS5 and beyond.

The curriculum allows pupils to communicate fluently across a range of texts in order to prepare them for life beyond school as we intend to enable them to express and articulate themselves with confidence in real world situations.

The KS3 curriculum is thematic, with each year group exploring texts that relate to the power of language and its significance in our day to day lives.

In Year 7, texts all relate to the origins of language and stories; Year 8 explores genre and Year 9 reflects upon our use of language to express ourselves and stand up for what we believe in. The curriculum is deliberately culturally enriching.

The texts we have chosen give pupils a foundation of some of the key writers in the literary canon: Shakespeare, Steinbeck, Orwell and the war poets among others. These texts have been chosen to provide students with knowledge of a diverse range of voices and representations and to promote the value of literature across cultures, genres and forms.
