English Curriculum Vision and Intent:
At The Oxford Academy, our English curriculum is designed to foster a lifelong love of reading and literature. By engaging with powerful texts, our students grow socially, emotionally, and intellectually, gaining the cultural capital they need to thrive.
A Foundation for the Future
We provide a rigorous academic foundation that empowers students to succeed at KS4, KS5, and beyond. Our goal is to develop fluent, confident communicators who can articulate their ideas with precision in any real-world situation.
The KS3 Journey: A Thematic Approach
Our Key Stage 3 curriculum follows a thematic path, exploring how language shapes our daily lives:
Year 7: Origins. Discovering the roots of language and the timeless power of storytelling.
Year 8: Genre. Exploring how form and style influence meaning across different literary traditions.
Year 9: Voices. Learning to use language to express identity and stand up for beliefs - directly preparing students for the rhetoric and analysis required in Year 11.
A Rich and Inclusive Canon
Our curriculum is deliberately enriching, combining cornerstones of the literary canon with a wider world of perspective. Students study:
-
Classic Authors: Including Shakespeare, Dickens, Orwell, and the War Poets.
-
Global Perspectives: A curated selection of voices from diverse backgrounds.
By exploring a wide range of genres and forms, we promote the value of literature across all cultures and identities.
