Adeeka's Story

Adeeka travels 30 miles a day to study at Advance – The Oxford Academy’s Sixth Form

After completing her GCSEs at a local school in High Wycombe, Adeeka and her parents were looking for somewhere exceptional for Adeeka to continue her education. Adeeka’s sister had already obtained top grades in her exams here at The Oxford Academy – enough to go to a good university – so Adeeka’s family decided that both Adeeka and her brother should study here to give them the best chance of also getting good grades.

Understandably, Adeeka was nervous when she first started, being unfamiliar to the area as well as leaving her school friends behind, but she found everyone – staff and students alike – very welcoming, friendly and supportive and she soon made new friends.

The teachers make sure you’re OK. They come over and check you are all right, that you don’t have any problems.

Flexible studying

Adeeka is studying A-level English Literature and double business BTEC. It’s not a typical combination, but Adeeka wanted to study subjects that would give her valuable skills for employment and reflected her own strengths. Unlike other sixth forms, TOA makes every effort to accommodate a mix of subjects for each of its students.

Like many students, Adeeka isn’t 100% sure where she will go next, but she does have her sights on university. It was The Oxford Academy’s wider reputation as one of the top performing schools in Oxfordshire that brought Adeeka all the way from High Wycombe to study here. But the extra time spent travelling is worth it and allowances are made for Adeeka’s journey.

There’s less restriction on what you can study and lots of flexibility over what you can choose.

The teachers are also really understanding about the travelling, even if I’m a bit late when the traffic is bad.

One of Oxfordshire’s best performing schools

The Oxford Academy is ranked first in Oxfordshire for progress, and 14th for progress in the whole country for GCSE results*. It’s ranked ‘good’ by Ofsted, with outstanding grades for leadership and management.

100% of all sixth form students gain employment or a university place.
