Introducing The Academy Health Nurse

Being healthy is essential if young people are to get the best out of life and fulfil their potential. As a qualified children’s nurse with further specialist training in the health needs of the school-aged population, I aim to equip the Academy’s students with the skills and knowledge to make healthy choices, ensuring that they are not disadvantaged though ill-health or disability. This involves working closely with the young people, you as parents or carers, the Academy staff, the wider community and professionals from other agencies.

I offer help and information on a range of health-related issues such as healthy eating and exercise, emotional wellbeing and self esteem, smoking and alcohol misuse and sexual health and contraception.  In addition to supporting students with individual health needs such as medical conditions including epilepsy, asthma or diabetes, I work alongside teachers in the classroom contributing to the Academy’s Personal Social Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE) and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) programmes.  Other important aspects of my role include small group work, working with other agencies to safeguard and promote the welfare of young people, and delivering immunisation programmes alongside the wider Oxford City School Nursing Team.

I am available for the students to come and see me during break times and can also take referrals from parents or carers and the Academy staff if they are concerned.  The school nursing service recognises the crucial role that families play in helping children through their teenage years and always tries to include the parent or carer in any discussions concerning their child.  However, as a health professional working within the NHS Primary Care Trust’s policies, school nurses can offer a confidential service if the student is deemed competent, it is in their best interest and they are not at risk of being harmed or harming themselves or others.

If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s health please contact me on the number below, or for more information on the role of the School Nurse please follow this link.
