July 2009
These are the latest guidelines issued by the DCSF applicable to school settings. This information will be updated if further information is received from the DCSF.
- Students are not considered a risk to others if they are well themselves. They can attend school
- Students displaying flu-like symptoms should not attend school at any time, in line with usual practice
- If you suspect your child may have swine flu, telephone the National Pandemic Flu Service on 0800 1 513 513 (Textphone for people who are deaf or hard of hearing: 0800 1 513 200) or visit their website www.direct.gov.uk/pandemicflu to register their symptoms and receive advice on treatment. If your child has other medical conditions which may exacerbate the flu, you should contact their GP immediately.
- Students who have fully recovered from influenza are able to return to all normal activities, including school, and do not pose a risk to others
By practising good hygiene, everyone can play their part and help to reduce transmission of all viruses, including swine flu:
- Wash hands frequently with soap and water to reduce the spread of virus from your hands to face or to other people
- Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, using a tissue when possible
- Dispose of dirty tissues promptly and carefully
