Latest News » The Oxford Academy results continue to improve

August 2009

The Principal of The Oxford Academy, Mike Reading, commented:

"The results this year demonstrate that the Academy is making progress and students have benefited from our first year. Overall, our results are better than many anticipated with 43% of students achieving at least 5 grades A* to C.

Despite working with the Year 11 students for only one year, the percentage of students on every national measure has improved. Even on the lead indicator including English and Maths, there has been an improvement. This is a real encouragement for those students who have shown a commitment to meeting the challenges of hard work and sustained effort through the year. It also demonstrates how parents’ persistence pays off in building confidence and supporting their child.

More students have achieved five or more GCSEs at grades A* to C than experienced before; 38% was already an improvement before the Academy started but this year our students reached 43%. The percentage number of A* to C grades is up by 16 points from 35% to 51 %. The percentage of A and A* grades is also up by seven points from 4%  to 11%.

I would like to congratulate every one of these students but especially Kirsty James who achieved five grade As or A* in her thirteen grades, Charlotte Stone who achieved six A grades in her results and Ellie Lamb who achieved four grade As in her 11 GCSEs. The headline results can mask the achievements of students who overcame tremendous obstacles to progress beyond expectation. They have inspired many around them and we also pass on our best wishes to them for the future.

Results in English and Maths have both increased together with a tremendous improvement in Science where results increased from 25% to over 60%.  This is excellent news for the Oxfordshire economy where Science plays such a critical role.

Parents and students have consistently told us that they believe that the Academy is a safer place, has better teaching and is determined to give students the best preparation for their future. Our admissions for the coming year are significantly higher; over 60% more parents want their child to attend the Academy and a similar increased figure have placed the Academy as their first preference of secondary school.

We made a commitment to bring in changes to the Academy that would last. This year has been a year of forming sound foundations for the future. I am confident that, as we progress through the coming year, we will build on the successes we have enjoyed this year and our students will gain even greater success. We look to the future with a great sense of optimism as we prepare for the move into the fantastic new buildings."
