February 2010
The Oxford Academy Sports Development Team have trained a number of The Academy’s Year 12 students to deliver the Active Lifestyle programme to local primary schools, in partnership with the Primary Care Trust and Youth Sport Trust.
The Active Lifestyle programme aims to help the nation’s obesity problems through increasing the amount of sport and physical activity our least active young people undertake on a weekly basis.
The students will be visiting John Henry Newman, Windale, Pegasus, Orchard Meadow and Rose Hill Primary schools to engage the pupils in fun sports and activities.
Gareth Jennings, Head of Sports & Community Development, The Oxford Academy, said "We are delighted to be delivering the Active Lifestyles programme in the local community as it promotes physical activity as a fun, healthy, integral part of everyday life. It also benefits our Year 12 students, developing their leadership and organisational skills"
The project is being organised and run by the Thame and Oxford SSP and is supported by Healthy Schools and the PCT.
Margaret Stevens, Partnership Development Manager for the Thame and City School Sports Partnership, said "The main aim of the project is to give pupils in Yr 5 / 6 at six local schools the opportunity to take part in fun activity sessions, and give them some important information which will help them to lead a healthy active lifestyle. By working with staff and students from The Oxford Academy the aim is to get 200 more young people being active from February 2010 onwards."
The Active Lifestyles programme is funded by the Department of Children, Schools and Families (DCSF).
