Latest News » The Oxford Academy receives Gold Award for parental engagement

October 2009

The Oxford Academy has been awarded the Engaging Parents Quality Standard (EPQS) Gold Award by the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust (SSAT).  The Oxford Academy is the first Academy to receive this award and one of only three secondary schools in the country to have reached the Gold Standard.

Chris Davis, Vice Principal at the Oxford Academy said:

"All of the parents, students and staff associated with The Oxford Academy are extremely proud of this recognition.  As a learning community all of us involved in the renaissance of fortunes, expectations, learning and achievement recognise the importance of engaging, not just learners in their learning, but reaching out to every single parent and carer and inviting them to share in the journey we are undertaking.

"Experience tells us that where parents, carers and indeed all stakeholders feel ownership of their places of learning - where they feel supported, empowered and integrated - that such schools and Academies flourish.

"Students make better progress when they have parents or carers who are also involved in their learning experience; whether it be a triangular target setting interview for their child, a meeting with architects and design team to contribute to the plans for the new build, helping Academy staff in the writing of their child’s Individual Learning Plan or even celebrating with us at The Oxford Academy’s first birthday party we want parents to join with us and their children every step of the way.  Every success will be our shared success; every milestone we reach will be with each other.

"Our ambition is that every parent feels they can make a contribution to their child’s learning and progress, whether it be simply through attending progress evenings or, better still, becoming part of our face-to-face or Online Parent Forums whose work will feed into our Academy improvement planning.  This is our Academy; every parent, carer, grandparent, aunt, uncle and indeed all members of our community should feel proud of what we have achieved together so far, and what we will achieve together in the future".

The Specialist Schools and Academies Trust (SSAT), is an independent, not-for-profit membership organisation dedicated to raising levels of achievement in secondary education.

The SSAT has a membership of over 5000 schools and organisations and are a registered charity.
