October 2009

As part of our new Attitudes to Learning Policy rewarding the positive contributions students make to life and learning at the Academy is a focus for all staff.  When students show consistently high levels of effort, achievement or progress they are issued with ‘Credits’.  These ‘Credits’ are accumulated over time and can be redeemed by students for prizes such as cinema tickets, bowling tickets, outdoor adventurous activity days, theme park tickets or even tickets to a top level sports event.  Staff also issue students with ‘Commendations’, which are equal to three credits, for outstanding contributions to Academy life or exceptional performance.

At the recent Parents Forum some parents raised concerns that ‘Credits’ were not being issued consistently; there is often a worry in schools that it is only the poorly behaved students who are rewarded when the behave well.  We hope this is not the case at the Academy and have issued strict instructions to staff that students should not be rewarded for simply doing what’s expected.  At the next Parent Forum I hope to bring a summary of how, where and when credits have been issued to date in the Academy.

The exciting news is that at the end of term 1 two students have accumulated a total of 99 ‘Credits’ between them.  Selina Butt (Year 9) has achieved an impressive 51 ‘Credits’ since the start of term with Damon Stone (Year 8) following closely behind with 48 ‘Credits’.  Selina and Damon have managed, on average, to achieve more than one ‘Credit’ a day – a fabulous achievement.

As a special recognition of their achievements to date in accumulating ‘Credits’ the Academy are delighted to present each student with a pair of tickets to watch the Rugby Union International between England and Australia, at Twickenham, on November 7.  We hope that the students have a wonderful day at the ‘HQ’ of English rugby courtesy of the Academy – we’re also sure that the lucky people that Selina and Damon decide to take with them will also have a wonderful day!

We look forward to more success next term with all students working hard to collect ‘Credits’.

If you’d like to know how many ‘Credits’ your child has achieved to this year, or would like any other information relating to your child’s performance, please contact your child’s tutor or learning mentor on 01865 774311.
