Karim Khan: Third Place in The Outstanding Achievement Award as part of The Oxfordshire Youth Awards 2009
Oxford Academy student Karim Khan, Deputy Member of the UK Youth Parliament for Oxford, collected yet another accolade for his work in raising the profile of young people’s rights yesterday evening at The Oxfordshire Youth Awards. The prestigious ceremony, attended by a variety of local dignitaries, took place in the salubrious surroundings of the Town Hall in the centre of Oxford. In all there were six Awards presented to a variety of young people from all over the county: The Outstanding Individual Achievement Award; The Individual Bravery Award; The Sports Award; The Arts Award; The Community Award and The Special Recognition Award.
The event, organised by the Oxfordshire Association for Young People (OAYP) and supported by Oxfordshire County Council, is part of an ongoing drive in the county to challenge the perception that young people are problematic and the root of antisocial behaviour. Fundamentally, the OAYP’s aim is to redress the balance by recognising the many positive and inspiring contributions young people make in our County. The OAYP was founded sixty two years ago and is Oxfordshire’s oldest voluntary youth charity.
Karim’s nomination for the Outstanding Individual Achievement Award was, in part, thanks to his contribution to the UK Youth Parliament but most significantly in relation to his work in raising the profile of young people’s rights. In fact, Karim’s passion for this endeavour inspired him to compose and direct a film Turn it Up which will be premiered on Wednesday 22 July at the Phoenix Picture House, Walton Street. Karim’s nomination for the Outstanding Individual Achievement Award is, in part, because of the work he undertook in creating this film.
Karim came third in his nominated category, much to the delight of his family in the audience. As always, Karim accepted his award with humility and grace – embodying all of the qualities he is seeking to highlight as latent in all young people.
All at the Oxford Academy are exceptionally proud of Karim and the work he has done in highlighting young people’s rights. Karim will be presenting some of his ideas to the Governing Board in the new academic year and continuing his work as part of the student council.
