Hudson's Story

“It’s easy to make friends and I feel at home here”

Hudson is one of our sixth form students. He arrived from Brazil four years ago, at the start of year 9. He didn’t know anyone when he started at The Oxford Academy and needed to establish a new life for himself here in the UK. Back then, Hudson had one major disadvantage.

He didn’t speak English.

His experience could have been bewildering, confusing and lonely, unable to communicate with anyone in a strange country.

Instead, The Oxford Academy stepped in and gave Hudson a huge amount of support, both with learning English as a second language and to make him feel welcome. He was given extra English lessons and extra support during his other lessons. HIs timetable was adjusted to allow him to fit it all in and accelerate his mastery of English.

It was scary at the beginning, but then the other students and teachers helped me to fit in. They were all really friendly and very quickly I felt at home.

“The most important GCSE to me was English”

It was hard work, but Hudson managed to overcome the language difficulty and was able to sit his GCSEs, in English, at the same time as his classmates. Keen to demonstrate to himself that he really had mastered the language, Hudson was determined to do well in his English GCSE. Overall, his grades were good, but it’s the C he obtained in English – a language he’d only been learning for three years – that he’s the most proud of.

A wealth of opportunity

Hudson is studying art, design and IT at sixth form and has had his art included in an exhibition hosted by Blackwells in Oxford. He hopes to go to university and study graphic design and is confident that his new home at The Oxford Academy will help him get there.

It’s easy to make friends and everyone is very welcoming. And the facilities are great – there’s a whole floor for IT and another one for art.
