Year 10 and 11 - Science

Students have 3 teachers for Biology, Chemistry and Physics and have been studying this course since Year 9. In this final year, the students are completing the following topics:

  • Combined Science Biology: variation, DNA, reproduction and cell division.
  • Combined Science and Triple Chemistry: reactions of metals, electrolysis, quantitative chemistry and reversible reactions.
  • Combined Science and Triple Physics: forces, momentum and space (triple only).

The initial teaching of all content will be completed by the end of January. Students will sit mock exams  in November and February, testing a variety of concepts from the whole specification.

GCSE Physics: http://filestore.aqa.org.uk/resources/physics/specifications/AQA-8463-SP-2016.PDF

In addition to content and revision lessons, students also have a study skills lesson which teaches them how to learn and revise. During terms 1&2 we will be focussing on how to factually recall information. Please ask your child about the techniques they have been using and encourage them to use these at home. Throughout the whole year students will be asked to memorise, and be tested on, a set of facts every fortnight. During term 3-6 students will be focussing on revision techniques such as mind mapping, creating flash cards and condensing information.

Your child will be sitting 6 exams (2 exams per specialism). If your child is studying Combined Science, each exam will be 1 hour 15 minutes. If your child is studying Triple Science, each exam will be 1 hour 45 minutes.

In order to prepare for the real GCSE and the mock exams in November and February your child can use the techniques they learn during the study skills lessons. They can use a variety of online resources:
https://www.doddlelearn.co.uk/app/login (log in details have been provided to every student), http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/levels/z98jmp3 andhttp://www.docbrown.info/gcsescience.htm> (use AQA resources only).

You can also buy your child revision guides to support them at home. Please make sure you buy the specific exam board, AQA, so that the content is tailored to the exam your child will sit. A variety of revision guides can be found on Amazon.

You can find a selection of past papers on the following websites:
