Year 8 and 13 students praised for

leadership skills through QuadKids

Over 40 primary school children were given the opportunity to try out a carousel of different athletic sports in support of the national QuadKids festival/initiative at The Oxford Academy at the beginning of February.Rosehill Primary try out long jump

Lead by Academy PE teacher, Nathan Broadhurst, Year 5 and 6 children from two the Academy’s partner schools, Rosehill Primary and local special school, Mabel Prichard, got the chance to test out their jumping, running and throwing skills whilst being carefully monitored by Year 8 and Sixth Form Academy students.

Whilst four Year 13 students were responsible for leading each of the ten-minute activities, ten of our Year 8s gave considerable support by helping to run the events and recording each child’s results (see table below).  Primary staff praised the outstanding effort and leadership skills of all Academy students who gave constant encouragement to the younger pupils.

“This event is good because it’s helping young kids get into sport and they have the chance to use the facilities at a special place like this.”

The Academy is proud of its extensive sporting facilities including an indoor sports hall which was home to the high and long jump events and its all weather astro pitch for the sprinting, hurdles, javelin, shot putt and discus.

The huge success of this event paves the way for future athletics events here at the Academy, not least our bonanza summer QuadKids festival involving all of the Academy’s partner primary schools.

QuadKids is a nationally proven athletics concept endorsed by England Athletics and designed to give more children the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of athletics and to identify the stars of tomorrow.  It includes the four core disciplines of running, throwing, jumping and sprinting - hence 'Quad' and is a simple, effective and inclusive way of getting more children to participate in physical activity.
