An Olympic end of term

The Oxford Academy ended the autumn half term in a sporting fashion, welcoming Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport, Jeremy Hunt (pictured below), into the Academy for a lunch meeting. Mr Hunt met with members of the local community to discuss the new School Games competition; inspired by the Olympic and Paralympic Games, taking place in London in 2012. The aim is to transform competitive sport in schools and encourage more young people to get involved in sports activities. The School Games will involve regional and national competitions, culminating in a showcase final at the stunning Olympic Stadium in May 2012. The Games are intended to continue beyond 2012, encouraging students’ involvement in sporting competition, with finals being held regularly at the Olympic Park. With a specialist status in sports and superb new facilities, The Oxford Academy were delighted to host the meeting. Principal Mike Reading commented, “We were delighted to be asked to host Jeremy Hunt’s visit to Oxford. As an Academy with a specialist status in sport, we are well aware of the benefits of competitive sport and of exercise, particularly for our young people.”
